The rise and fall of baseball's most dominant closer
In short: In 2024, Emmanuel Clase was the undisputed king of the bullpen, leading the American League in saves with a staggering 0.61 ERA. Yet, by late 2025, the Dominican star faced a federal indictment that threatened to dismantle his entire career legacy.
Emmanuel Clase's ascent to Major League Baseball stardom was defined by unprecedented velocity and precision. Following a $125,000 2015 international free agent deal with San Diego, he climbed the minor league ranks before his 2019 Texas Rangers debut. His signature weapon, a cutter, averaged 99.2 miles per hour, making it the fastest in the league. By the time he became the Cleveland Guardians' primary closer in 2021, he was setting franchise records and earning American League Reliever of the Year honors in both 2022 and 2024.
Clase's statistical dominance was nearly peerless. During the 2024 campaign, he posted 47 saves and the second-best ERA in history for any pitcher throwing 70+ innings. However, his postseason performance in 2024 provided a stark contrast, as his ERA rose to 10.29 after surrendering critical home runs to hitters like Aaron Judge and Kerry Carpenter. Despite these fluctuations, he remained the franchise's all-time save leader through August 2024.
The trajectory of his career shifted abruptly in 2025. Following an investigation into sports betting, Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave in July 2025. The situation escalated in November 2025 when federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York indicted him on charges including wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering, and conspiracy to influence sporting contests through bribery. The indictment alleges that Clase and a teammate agreed to manipulate pitch types and speeds to facilitate betting. Following his arrest at JFK Airport, Clase entered a plea of not guilty.
