The billionaire architect of six billion-dollar tech unicorns
In short: From borrowing money from relatives to building a $6 billion empire, Eric Lefkofsky has mastered the art of the scale. He has founded six different companies that achieved unicorn status, navigating everything from clothing retail to high-stakes advertising technology and personalized medical AI.
Eric Lefkofsky's career is defined by a rapid succession of high-value ventures. After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School in 1993, he and partner Brad Keywell began by purchasing Brandon Apparel. This early venture transitioned into the digital space with Starbelly, a promotional products firm sold in 2000 to Halo Industries, where Lefkofsky served as chief operating officer. Following this, he co-founded the print procurement firm InnerWorkings in 2001. He also established Echo Global Logistics in 2005.
His ability to scale businesses became evident through the founding of InnerWorkings in 2001 and Echo Global Logistics in 2005. Both companies successfully navigated the public markets, with InnerWorkings going public in August 2006 and Echo Global Logistics listing on the Nasdaq in June 2006. His influence extended into the advertising sector via MediaBank, which eventually merged with Donovan Data Systems in 2012 to form Mediaocean in a deal valued at approximately $1.5 billion.
Perhaps his most famous venture was Groupon. Originally ThePoint.com, the site received $1 million in funding from Lefkofsky in 2007. Despite a rejected $6 billion acquisition offer from Google in 2010, the company reached a $1.35 billion valuation by 2010. Lefkofsky later served as Groupon's CEO from 2013 to 2016. Today, he leads Tempus AI, a company focused on personalized physician care that went public in June 2024. His net worth was estimated at US$6 billion as of September 2025. Beyond his corporate leadership, he is a co-managing partner at the Chicago-based venture capital firm Lightbank. He also serves as a trustee for the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
