How a 'hired hand' from Donegal built a choir of one
In short: She wasn't a permanent member of Clannad, yet she became the world's best-selling Irish solo artist. Through a unique process of vocal layering and a partnership with the Ryans, Enya transformed from a background singer into a global phenomenon with over 8 and 80 million albums sold.
Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, known professionally as Enya, began her career in the 1980s playing with her family's folk band, Clannad. While her siblings Moya, Pól, and Ciarán were core members, Enya's role was more transient. In later interviews, her brother Ciarán and sister Moya described her as a 'hired hand,' a sentiment Enya herself echoed, noting she felt she was 'just passing through' at age 18.
The turning point came in 1982 when Enya left Clannad to pursue a solo path alongside producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. To develop her signature sound—a 'choir of one' inspired by Phil Spector’s 'Wall of Sound'—Enya practiced by listening to recordings of herself reciting classical music, repeating the process until she could improvise her own arrangements. This technique relied on multi-layered vocals, lengthened reverb, and a blend of Celtic, classical, and folk elements.
Her ascent was marked by both cinematic success and unexpected global shifts. After scoring the BBC documentary *The Celts* in 1987, her second album, *Watermark* (1988), propelled her to worldwide fame via the single 'Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)'. Later, the 2000 album *A Day Without Rain* saw a massive surge in the United States, driven by the use of the single 'Only Time' in media coverage of the September 11 attacks.
Despite her massive commercial success, Enya's journey was shaped by personal grit. To help fund her new musical direction after her bank denied a loan, she reportedly sold her saxophone and worked as a piano teacher. Today, with an estimated 80 million albums sold, she remains the most successful solo artist from Ireland, second only to the band U2 in Irish musical exports.
