How a Brazilian football club rose from the ashes of a stadium tragedy
In short: In 2007, a structural collapse at the Estádio Fonte Nova claimed seven lives and forced a club into exile. Yet, despite relegation and financial instability, Esporte Clube Bahia emerged as a symbol of resilience and social change.
Founded on New Year's Day 1931 through a merger of two local clubs, Esporte Clube Bahia has long been a powerhouse in Brazil's Northeast. The club's identity is woven from its history, featuring a crest inspired by Corinthians and a color palette of blue, white, and red—honoring its founding entities and the Bahia state flag. Throughout its history, the club has achieved significant milestones, including two national championships in 1959 and 1988, and a record 52 state league titles.
The club's journey has been marked by extreme highs and devastating lows. The 1988 victory over Internacional was a shock to the southern Brazilian press, representing a triumph for the Northeast. However, the 2007 stadium collapse in Salvador led to the demolition of the original Fonte Nova and forced the club to play in cities like Feira de Santana. This era of hardship gave rise to the 'Fênix Tricolor' (Tricolored Phoenix) moniker, celebrating the club's ability to rise from the ashes after being relegated to the third division.
In recent years, Bahia has undergone a massive structural transformation. In May 2023, the City Football Group, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi United Group, completed a takeover by acquiring 90% of the club's shares. This move integrated Bahia into a global network of clubs, making it the third South American team to join the group. Beyond the pitch, the club has also seen a fan-led shift toward more socially engaged politics, addressing issues such as racism and LGBTQ rights.
