In short: Founded by Italian immigrants, Cruzeiro Esporte Clube underwent a forced transformation during World War II. What began as a community-focused club with green, white, and red colors eventually became a blue-and-white powerhouse, winning national championships and continental trophies across nearly a century of history.

In 1921, members of Belo Horizonte's Italian immigrant community founded the club as Società Sportiva Palestra Itália. To honor their heritage, they adopted the green, white, and red colors of the Italian flag. For years, the club remained deeply tied to its ethnic roots, only removing restrictions on participation for those outside the Italian colony in 1925.

The club's identity was fundamentally altered by the geopolitical tensions of World War II. Following Brazil's entry into the conflict, federal restrictions prohibited organizations from bearing names or symbols associated with Axis powers. On 7 October 1942, the club officially changed its name to Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, inspired by the Southern Cross constellation on the Brazilian flag, and transitioned to its iconic blue and white colors.

This rebranding preceded a period of immense success. Cruzeiro's 1966 Taça Brasil victory against Santos marked the initial time a Minas Gerais side secured a national title. The club's trophy cabinet has since grown to include four Brazilian championships (1966, 2003, 2013, and 2014), six Copa do Brasil titles, and two Copa Libertadores titles (1976 and 1997).

After a period of severe financial and governance crisis that led to its first relegation in 2019, the club underwent a major restructuring. In 2021, it transitioned into a Sociedade Anônima do Futebol (SAF). Former player Ronaldo initially acquired a 90% controlling interest, but by April 2024, that stake was sold to businessman Pedro Lourenço.
