Will video games remain a staple of the Asian Games in 2026?
In short: Esports is set to return to the Asian Games in 2026, but its future is anything but certain. While organizers have finalized a massive lineup of thirteen video game titles, a separate movement is brewing to move non-traditional sports into their own dedicated competitions.
For the second time, esports will feature as a medal sport during the 2026 Asian Games, held at the Aichi International Exhibition Center between 22 September and 2 October 2026. This follows its initial debut as a demonstration event in 2018. The Olympic Council of Asia formally approved these digital contests on 8 July 2023, with co-organisation by the Asian Electronic Sports Federation and the Japan Esports Union. The tournament will take place at the Aichi International Exhibition Centre. This marks the second time the event has included esports as a medal competition.
The selection process for the games has been a complex, evolving affair. On 6 February 2025, the OCA's executive board initially approved 11 video game titles. However, by 22 February 2025, this was updated to a lineup featuring 13 video game titles spread across 11 distinct events. To prepare for this, qualification tournaments were held for six events across Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.
The definition of 'sport' at the games is also being tested by Virtual Taekwondo (VTKD). This virtual reality fighting game, based on conventional taekwondo, will be featured in the games. However, in a curious distinction of classification, VTKD is grouped with the taekwondo event rather than being categorized as an esports title for the purposes of the official games calendar. This classification choice highlights the ongoing debate regarding what constitutes a traditional sport. Such distinctions remain vital for the official scheduling of the games.
