In short: Formed in 1979 as Force, the Swedish band Europe rose from local rehearsal rooms to international stardom with their 1986 anthem, The Final Countdown. Despite internal shifts, hiatuses, and changing musical trends, the group has maintained a resilient career, evolving their sound through decades of studio albums and global tours.

The band began in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, under the name Force. Founded by Joey Tempest, John Norum, Peter Olsson, and Tony Reno, they initially focused on learning instruments by playing covers before transitioning to original material. Their breakthrough arrived in 1982 when they won the inaugural Rock-SM competition, a televised talent contest featuring 4,000 bands. Shortly before this victory, they adopted the name Europe, inspired by a Deep Purple album.

Their international ascent was cemented by the 1986 release of The Final Countdown. The album achieved Triple Platinum status in the United States and reached number 1 in 25 countries. However, the band's commercialized image and keyboard-heavy production led guitarist John Norum to depart later that year, citing a dislike for the group's 'teeny-bopper' direction. He was replaced by Kee Marcello, who joined during the band's peak popularity. By 1992, the group entered an indefinite hiatus, with members pursuing solo projects as the grunge movement shifted the musical landscape.

Europe reunited officially in 2003, aiming to move forward with a fresh, modern sound. Their comeback album, Start from the Dark (2004), featured a detuned, rawer aesthetic, marking a departure from their 1980s output. Since then, the band has maintained a consistent output of studio albums, including War of Kings (2015) and Walk the Earth (2017). They have continued to celebrate their legacy, performing anniversary tours for their seminal records while remaining active in the global rock scene for over four decades.
