How a reluctant traveler turned a rejection into a comedy career
In short: He initially turned down the role of the iconic Noah Levenstein, fearing the character was too hip. Yet, Eugene Levy’s career is defined by the awkward, the well-meaning, and the beautifully unpolished. From sketch comedy roots to global stardom, discover the man behind the deadpan.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1946, Eugene Levy’s path to comedy was forged in the vibrant theater scenes of his youth. While studying sociology at McMaster University, he worked alongside future legends like Ivan Reitman and Martin Short. His professional debut came in 1972 in a Toronto production of the musical Godspell, a local success that launched the careers of several Canadian icons.
Levy became a cornerstone of the Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV, where he honed his skills as a performer and writer. During this era, he became famous for his deadpan impersonations of figures ranging from Alex Trebek to Henry Kissinger. He also found success in the 'mockumentary' genre, collaborating with director Christopher Guest on films such as Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show. His talent for melody even earned him a Grammy Award in 2004 for cowriting the theme from A Mighty Wind.
His most recognizable characters, however, often stem from a willingness to embrace the awkward. In the 1999 film American Pie, he initially hesitated to play the 'corny' dad, Noah Levenstein, but joined the cast after being promised the freedom to improvise. This same charm led to the massive success of Schitt’s Creek (2015–2020), which he co-created with his son, Dan Levy. The series earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in 2020.
Even his recent ventures reflect his unique persona. When approached by Apple TV+ to host a travel show, Levy’s initial resistance—rooted in a preference for staying home—became the very concept for The Reluctant Traveler. It is a career built not on chasing trends, but on the strength of a distinct, endearing, and often delightfully flustered perspective.
