In short: Founded in 2009 to advocate for Eurorealism rather than total rejection of the European Union, the ECR Party has evolved significantly. Once a centre-right coalition, it has increasingly embraced far-right movements, reshaping its political identity and internal dynamics while navigating complex European funding regulations and internal governance challenges.

The European Conservatives and Reformists Party, or ECR, emerged on 1 October 2009, following the formation of the ECR group in the European Parliament. Initially known as the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists, it aimed to reform the European Union through a lens of Eurorealism. Its founding members included major political forces such as the UK Conservative Party, Poland's PiS, and the Czech ODS. Over the years, the party underwent several name changes and expanded its reach, incorporating diverse international partners ranging from the Republican Party of the United States to the Likud Movement in Israel.

The party's ideological trajectory has shifted noticeably over time. While historically positioned as centre-right, the inclusion of parties like Brothers of Italy, Vox, and the Sweden Democrats in 2019 marked a distinct move toward the conservative right. This transition reflects the broader global rise of radical right politics. Governance is managed by a board of directors elected by a council representing all member parties, with current leadership including President Adam Bielan and Secretary General Antonio Giordano.

Financial oversight has been a point of contention for the organization. In December 2018, the ECR was ordered to repay over half a million euros in EU funds following an investigation into its spending, which included significant costs for conferences in Miami and Kampala. Today, the party must adhere to strict regulations, including a requirement to raise at least 10% of its reimbursable expenditure from private sources. Despite these challenges, the ECR remains a key player in the European political landscape, maintaining affiliations with various think tanks and youth organizations.
