The litigious career of Canadian media personality Ezra Levant and his battles with libel
In short: Ezra Levant, a prominent Canadian media figure and founder of Rebel News, has built a career defined by aggressive political commentary and frequent legal entanglements. While he frames his battles as a defense of free speech, his history of libel judgments reveals a pattern of reckless disregard for the truth.
Born in 1972, Levant rose to public attention in 2006 by publishing controversial Muhammad cartoons in his magazine, the Western Standard. This sparked a legal conflict with the Alberta Human Rights Commission, which Levant later chronicled in his book Shakedown. His supporters view these actions as a stand for liberty, but his career has also been marked by repeated accusations of defamation against those he targets in his writing.
Levant has faced multiple successful libel lawsuits throughout his career. In 2011 and 2014, courts ordered him to pay significant damages. Notably, in a case involving lawyer Khurrum Awan, Judge Wendy Matheson found that Levant acted with express malice and a reckless disregard for the truth, failing to perform basic fact-checking. The court ordered him to pay $80,000 in damages, a decision later upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal and denied leave to appeal by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2017.
While Levant often characterizes these legal challenges as politically motivated nuisance suits designed to silence him, he has not shied away from using the legal system himself. In one instance, he sued a conservative activist for questioning his financial management, settling for an apology and $5,000. These contradictions highlight the complex intersection of media, law, and political activism in Canada, where the boundaries of free expression are frequently tested by those who claim to champion them.
Levant’s media ventures, particularly Rebel News, have faced their own controversies, including advertising boycotts and the departure of co-founders citing a lack of editorial standards. Despite these pressures, the platform has maintained a large digital footprint, with over 1.56 million YouTube subscribers as of February 2022. His career remains a polarizing case study in the risks and rewards of combative, independent digital journalism.
