How a Semitic hook became the modern letter F
In short: The letter F is far more than a simple character in our alphabet. It is a linguistic survivor, evolving from an ancient symbol of a club or hook into a versatile tool used in everything from musical notation to hexadecimal math.
The lineage of F begins with the Semitic letter waw, a symbol that likely depicted a club or a hook. This character was later adopted by the Greeks, where it existed in two forms: as the vowel upsilon and as the consonant digamma (Ϝ), which represented the /w/ sound. While most Greek dialects eventually lost the /w/ sound, the shape of digamma persisted, eventually descending into the Latin letter F.
The transition to the modern F involved a complex series of phonetic shifts. In the Etruscan alphabet, the letter likely still represented /w/, and the Etruscans used a digraph, 'FH', to denote the /f/ sound. When the Romans developed their alphabet, they utilized the letter V to represent both the vowel /u/ and the semivowel /w/. This left the letter F available to specifically represent the /f/ sound. While Latin initially used the 'FH' combination, the 'H' was eventually dropped, stabilizing the letter we recognize today.
Beyond its role in writing, F carries diverse meanings across disciplines. In music, a bold italic *f* signals 'forte', meaning loud or strong. In mathematics, it can denote an arbitrary function, while in hexadecimal, F represents the decimal value 15. Even in modern digital culture, the letter has taken on a life of its own as an internet meme used to 'pay respects', a reference to a specific interaction in the 2014 game Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
