Can a YouTuber turn the European Parliament into a tool for direct digital democracy?
In short: Fidias Panayiotou, a Cypriot influencer with no prior political experience, leveraged his massive social media following to secure a seat in the European Parliament. Now, he is attempting to bypass traditional party structures by using a mobile app to let his constituents dictate his voting record in real time.
Born in 2000, Fidias Panayiotou rose to prominence as a YouTuber known for high-energy stunts, including a persistent campaign to hug Elon Musk and various travel challenges that occasionally drew controversy and platform bans. By January 2025, his YouTube channel boasted over 2.7 million subscribers. His transition to formal politics began in April 2024, when he launched an anti-partisan campaign for the European Parliament. Running on a platform that prioritized youth engagement, self-education, and the integration of artificial intelligence, he secured 19.4% of the popular vote, finishing third and winning a seat.
Once in office, Panayiotou began experimenting with what he calls direct democracy. He frequently uses social media polls to determine his legislative stances, such as his vote against Ursula von der Leyen’s reappointment as European Commission president. In October 2025, he formalized this approach by founding the party Direct Democracy Cyprus. The party’s core mechanism is a mobile application called Agorà, which allows verified citizens to vote on parliamentary matters. Panayiotou envisions this as a 'Trojan horse' strategy, where representatives act as conduits for the public's will, eventually aiming to shift the political system away from traditional parliamentarism entirely.
This unconventional approach has drawn both intense scrutiny and high-profile support. While Elon Musk has publicly praised Panayiotou’s energy and views, leading some to label him 'Elon Musk's man in the European Parliament,' Panayiotou denies being a puppet. His tenure has been marked by significant friction, including criticism over his voting record regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his controversial comments about Paralympic athletes, and his efforts to address the Cyprus problem through dialogue with Turkish Cypriot influencers. As he attempts to scale his direct democracy model, the political establishment remains divided on whether his digital-first approach represents a genuine democratic evolution or a disruptive novelty.
