Why a professional wrestler adopted the name of a legendary Irish demon king
In short: Before becoming a global wrestling star, Fergal Devitt was told his name was unpronounceable in Japan. He transformed into Finn Bálor, a persona drawing from Irish mythology. This shift marked the evolution of a career that spanned from local Irish rings to the pinnacle of international sports entertainment.
Born in 1981 in County Wicklow, Ireland, Fergal Devitt began his professional wrestling journey in 2001. After training at NWA UK Hammerlock, he quickly expanded his reach, touring the United Kingdom and the United States. By 2002, he established his own promotion, NWA Ireland, where he mentored future stars like Becky Lynch. His early career was defined by a rapid ascent, securing multiple championships across various independent circuits before his talent drew international attention.
In 2006, Devitt signed with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). The promotion renamed him Prince Devitt, as they believed his birth name was difficult for Japanese audiences to pronounce. During his tenure in Japan, he became a central figure, winning the Best of the Super Juniors tournament twice and establishing the Bullet Club stable. It was during this period that he began using elaborate body paint for major matches, a signature aesthetic that would follow him throughout his career.
Upon joining WWE in 2014, he adopted the ring name Finn Bálor. This name was inspired by two figures from Irish mythology: Fionn mac Cumhaill and Balor, the latter being a Gaelic term for a demon king. His transition to the main roster was historic; in 2016, he became the inaugural WWE Universal Champion during his pay-per-view debut. His career remains a testament to his adaptability, transitioning from a technical wrestler in Japan to a global icon who blends traditional athleticism with mythological imagery.
