Why the Swiss flag is a square, not a rectangle, and its ancient origins

In short: Most national flags are rectangular, but Switzerland’s iconic white cross on a red field is famously square. This unique shape evolved from a medieval field sign used by soldiers to identify their allies in battle, eventually transforming from a simple textile patch into a symbol of national identity and neutrality.

The Swiss flag’s origins lie in the 13th or 14th century, when a white cross served as a field sign for the Old Swiss Confederacy. Combatants wore these as linen strips to distinguish themselves from rivals like Habsburg Austria. While legends attribute the cross to the Theban Legion or the Imperial War Banner, it was first explicitly documented as a confederate symbol during the 1339 Battle of Laupen. By the 15th century, the cross appeared on cantonal flags, eventually becoming a standalone emblem for the Confederacy by 1540.

For centuries, the design remained fluid. During the 17th and 18th centuries, military units often used flammé flags, and after the 1798 French invasion, the Confederacy’s symbols were briefly replaced by a tricolour. The white cross was officially revived for the federal seal in 1815, though it was not until 1889 that the Swiss Federal Council formally defined its dimensions. Even then, the relative size of the cross within the field remained undefined until a 2017 law finally set the ratio at 5:8.

Today, the square flag is the standard for the Swiss Confederation, though exceptions exist. Swiss ships, aircraft, and non-governmental bodies use a rectangular 2:3 version to align with international norms. The design is so deeply ingrained that it even inspired the Red Cross emblem, which is simply the Swiss flag with inverted colours. Despite its modern precision, the flag remains a testament to a history that began not as a state banner, but as a practical marker for soldiers on the field.
