In short: In September 1607, two powerful Irish lords fled their ancestral lands for Europe. This was not merely a retreat, but a permanent departure that signaled the collapse of the Gaelic social order and paved the way for the massive Plantation of Ulster.

The Flight of the Earls saw Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O'Doherty, Earl of Tyrconnell, depart from Rathmullan with roughly 100 followers. Having survived the brutal Nine Years' War (1593–1603)—a conflict that cost Queen Elizabeth I an estimated £2,000,000 to suppress—the earls had initially received surprisingly lenient peace terms from King James I. However, the peace was fragile. The imposition of English common law and the replacement of the Gaelic tanistry system with primogeniture created deep legal and financial instability.

The motivation behind the flight remains a subject of intense historical debate. Some evidence suggests the earls were attempting to evade imminent arrest or execution, as they believed the English administration, led by the aggressive Lord Deputy Arthur Chichester, was conspiring against them. Others suggest the flight was a failed attempt to secure Spanish military aid. While the earls sought refuge in Catholic Europe, their journey was fraught; storms prevented them from reaching Spain, forcing them to land in France before eventually finding temporary sanctuary in the Spanish Netherlands and Rome.

The consequences were transformative. King James declared the departure treasonous, providing the legal pretext to seize the earls' vast territories. These lands were subsequently redistributed to Protestant settlers from Great Britain during the Plantation of Ulster. While the earls' lives ended in exile—Tyrconnell died of fever in 1608 and Tyrone in 1616—their departure effectively dismantled the power of the O'Neill and O'Donnell clans and fundamentally altered the demographic and political landscape of Ireland.
