In short: Once a quiet collection of citrus orchards and chicken ranches, Fontana underwent a radical metamorphosis during World War II. The arrival of massive steel production changed the city's DNA forever, shifting its economic heartbeat from agriculture to heavy industry and setting the stage for its modern identity.

Before the mid-20th century, the area known as Rosena was a quintessential agricultural community. Established as a citrus, vineyard, and poultry center, it even hosted the nation's only research facility dedicated to rabbit breeding between 1928 and 1965. However, the landscape was irrevocably altered in 1942 when entrepreneur Henry J. Kaiser constructed a massive integrated steel mill. At that time, this facility was one of only two steel mills located west of the Mississippi River, marking a decisive pivot from rural life to industrial powerhouse.

This industrial surge brought significant infrastructure and social changes. To support the health of the mill's workforce, Kaiser established the Fontana Kaiser Permanente medical facility, which has since grown into the largest managed care organization in the United States. The city's economy eventually transitioned from steel to becoming a major regional hub for the trucking industry, supported by the intersection of Interstate 10, Interstate 15, and State Route 210.

Today, Fontana faces the complexities of its industrial legacy. While it remains a vital logistics center, the city has dealt with legal challenges regarding warehouse development and environmental protections. Recent tensions have centered on the California Air Resources Board's advice against housing residents near industrial warehouses due to truck pollution. Looking forward, the city is eyeing a new era of manufacturing, with plans for a zero-emission truck facility capable of producing up to 100,000 electric vehicles annually.
