The university that once recruited more National Achievement Scholars than Harvard
In short: In the late 1990s, Florida A&M University achieved a rare academic feat, outperforming the Ivy League in recruiting top-tier scholars. But the institution's history is defined by more than just prestige; it is a saga of student-led resistance, transformative civil rights activism, and recent financial scandals.
Founded in 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students, Florida A&M University (FAMU) has long served as a vital pillar of Black education in the South. Its origins are deeply tied to the era of segregation; the college was established following the 1885 Florida Constitution, which prohibited integrated schooling. The university's very location in Tallahassee was a response to the high African-American population in Leon County, a region shaped by the former center of the state's slave trade.
The university's history is punctuated by periods of intense student activism. During the 1920s, a student strike erupted in 1923 after Governor Cary A. Hardee attempted to strip the school of its liberal arts curriculum to focus solely on vocational training. Decades later, during the Civil Rights Movement, FAMU students became architects of change. In 1956, students Wilhemina Jakes and Carrie Patterson sparked the Tallahassee bus boycotts after being arrested for protesting segregation. By 1960, student-led 'tests' of segregation in local stores and lunch counters led to mass arrests, with some protestors choosing jail sentences over bail to demonstrate their commitment to justice.
Despite its academic triumphs—including being named a Time-Princeton Review 'College of the Year' in 1997—the university has faced significant modern turbulence. In 2024, the institution was rocked by a massive, unverified $237 million donation from Gregory Gerami. An investigation later revealed the gift held no real cash value, leading to the resignation of university president Larry Robinson. This follows a period of intense scrutiny following a 2011 hazing tragedy that resulted in the death of band member Robert Champion and placed the university on accreditation probation.
