From expansion underdogs to back-to-back Stanley Cup champions: the Florida Panthers' unlikely rise

In short: Founded in 1993, the Florida Panthers spent decades as an NHL outlier, defined by a bizarre rat-throwing tradition and a painful postseason drought. Yet, after years of front-office instability and missed opportunities, the franchise transformed into a powerhouse, securing consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 2024 and 2025.

The Florida Panthers entered the NHL in 1993, founded by Blockbuster Video magnate Wayne Huizenga with a $50 million entry fee. Despite a staff that admitted knowing nothing about hockey, the team enjoyed immediate success, narrowly missing the 1994 playoffs. By 1996, they reached their first Stanley Cup Final, famously fueled by a fan-led tradition of throwing rubber rats onto the ice after a locker room incident involving Scott Mellanby.

Following that initial surge, the franchise entered a long period of stagnation. Between 1997 and 2021, the team qualified for the playoffs only six times and failed to win a single series. This era was marked by questionable trades, such as the 2006 deal sending star goaltender Roberto Luongo to Vancouver, and a record-setting nine-year playoff drought that made them the first team in NHL history to miss the postseason for so long in a single city.

The turning point arrived with the hiring of general manager Bill Zito in 2020. Under his leadership, the team broke its 26-year playoff series win drought in 2022 and clinched its first Presidents' Trophy. This momentum culminated in an unprecedented run of three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances from 2023 to 2025, resulting in the franchise's first two championships. Today, the Panthers stand as a dominant force, a stark contrast to their early days as a struggling expansion experiment.
