How a short, dark-haired actor became the 1970s' ultimate symbol of cool
In short: In 1974, producer Garry Marshall wanted a tall, blond leading man for his new sitcom. Instead, he got a 5-foot-6 actor with a leather jacket and a signature 'ayyy' that would define a decade of pop culture.
When the pilot for Happy Days aired in 197 and 84, the character of Arthur Fonzarelli—better known as 'Fonzie'—was intended only as a secondary sidekick to Richie Cunningham. However, the character's immense popularity quickly shifted the show's gravity. He became such a phenomenon that producers even considered renaming the series 'Fonzie's Happy Days.' Clad in his iconic black leather jacket and blue jeans, the 'greaser' archetype became a global sensation, appearing on everything from posters to tube socks.
The creation of the character involved specific creative flourishes from the writing staff. Producer Bob Brunner is credited with inventing both the nickname 'Fonzie' and the character's signature put-down, 'Sit on it.' While the character was often viewed as a sex symbol and the epitome of coolness, Henry Winkler infused the role with unexpected depth. Beneath the slicked-back hair and motorcycle-riding bravado, Winkler crafted a character with significant pathos, exploring themes of abandonment and family through Fonzie's complex relationship with his absent father and his devotion to mother figures like Marion Cunningham.
However, the character's massive success brought significant professional risks. The role was so dominant that it nearly typecast Winkler, threatening to derail his broader acting career. The character's trajectory also gave rise to the famous idiom 'jump the shark,' a term used to describe when a successful series undergoes a decline in quality. This phrase was inspired by a 1977 episode where Fonzie performed a ridiculous stunt: water skiing over a shark while wearing his signature leather jacket and denim shorts. Despite this move toward caricature, Winkler eventually transitioned into a respected character actor, earning acclaim in later years for roles in series like Barry.
