In short: The Football Association of Ireland was born from a bitter dispute over perceived bias in Belfast. For decades, two separate bodies claimed to represent the entire island, leading to a complex era where players frequently switched allegiances between teams, until FIFA finally intervened to settle the naming conventions in 1954.

The roots of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) lie in the 1921 split from the Irish Football Association (IFA), which had been founded in Belfast in 1880. Southern clubs felt the IFA neglected the game outside of Ulster and harboured a deep-seated suspicion of Belfast bias regarding international team selection and match hosting. These tensions were exacerbated by the Irish War of Independence, culminating in the Leinster Football Association's decision to disaffiliate from the IFA on 8 June 1921. The FAI was subsequently established in Dublin on 2 September 1921.

Between 1936 and 1946, the FAI selected players from Northern Ireland, while the IFA continued to pick southern players until 1950. This confusion was only resolved at the 1954 FIFA Congress in Lisbon, where FIFA decreed that the FAI would be known as the Republic of Ireland and the IFA as Northern Ireland. This jurisdictional clarity did not stop the FAI from facing internal challenges, including the abandonment of the Eircom Park stadium project in 2001 and the fallout from the 2002 World Cup, which prompted the critical Genesis report.

Modern governance of the FAI has evolved significantly since those early, often amateur, days. Following a 2019 governance review, the association introduced independent directors to its board, with Roy Barrett appointed as the first independent chair in January 2020. Today, the FAI oversees a vast structure that includes provincial associations, education bodies, and specialized programs like the Football for All initiative. Despite the historical friction, the FAI has grown from a regional breakaway group into a complex national governing body managing everything from underage competitions to the senior international teams.
