How a century-old football league evolved from eight Dublin clubs to a national phenomenon
In short: Founded in 1921 with just eight teams from County Dublin, the League of Ireland has transformed into a complex, multi-tiered professional structure. Today, it encompasses men’s and women’s divisions, youth leagues, and a growing national footprint that recently saw total annual match attendance surpass the one million mark.
The League of Ireland began in 1921 as a single-division competition, the A Division, featuring clubs like Bohemians and Shelbourne. For its first decade, the league was dominated by Dublin-based teams, though expansion began early; Athlone Town became the first non-Dublin participant in 1922–23, and Dundalk eventually became the first club from outside the capital to win the title in 1932–33. The structure underwent significant changes over the decades, notably in 1985 when the A Division was rebranded as the Premier Division and a new second-tier First Division was introduced.
Governance and professional standards have evolved alongside the league's geography. The league merged formally with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) in 2006 and, in 2007, became one of the first European leagues to implement a salary cap. The pyramid is set to expand further in 2026 with the introduction of a new third-tier National League, which aims to integrate twenty clubs across two regional conferences. This growth is supported by a robust youth development system, including divisions ranging from U14 to U23, ensuring a pipeline of talent for the professional ranks.
Commercial and cultural interest has surged in recent years. In 2024, total attendance across all league competitions, including the men's and women's Premier Divisions and cup matches, exceeded one million spectators for the first time, reaching 1,001,630. This figure climbed to 1,127,155 in 2025. Broadcasting has also modernized, moving from traditional highlights shows on RTÉ to a mix of free-to-air coverage on Virgin Media Television and dedicated streaming via LOI TV, reflecting the league's transition from a local Dublin pursuit to a national sporting institution.
