A Georgia military installation has undergone multiple name changes in just two years
In short: Originally established in 1941, this massive Army post near Augusta has evolved from a World War II training camp into a global nerve center for cyber warfare. Its identity has shifted rapidly, recently moving from a presidential namesake back to a tribute honoring a Medal of Honor recipient.
The installation, located southwest of Augusta, Georgia, began its life in 1941 as a training site for divisions during World War II. Over the decades, it served diverse roles, including as an internment camp for foreign prisoners of war and a processing center for soldiers returning to civilian life. By the late 1940s, it transitioned into a hub for the Military Police and Signal Corps, eventually becoming the primary location for signal training in 1974.
In the 21st century, the post underwent a significant strategic pivot. Recognizing the growing necessity of digital defense, the Army consolidated its cyber operations at the site. Today, the facility functions as a 24/7 operational base, housing the Army Cyber Command and the Cyber Center of Excellence. This shift transformed the post from a traditional training schoolhouse into a critical node for information warfare, intelligence, and network security, supporting thousands of military and civilian personnel.
The naming history of the base reflects broader national debates. Initially named for a Confederate officer, it was redesignated as Fort Eisenhower in 2023 following recommendations from a Department of Defense commission. However, this change was short-lived. In June 2025, the base was renamed back to Fort Gordon, this time to honor Master Sergeant Gary Gordon, a recipient of the Medal of Honor. This rapid succession of titles marks it as a unique case in the history of U.S. military installations.
