From child star to director, the complex career of Fred Savage
In short: Fred Savage became a household name as the youngest actor to earn Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his role in The Wonder Years. Yet, his trajectory from a child prodigy to a prolific director and producer has been shadowed by repeated allegations of misconduct throughout his decades in the industry.
Born in 1976 in Chicago, Savage began his screen career at nine. He gained national recognition in 1987 as the grandson in The Princess Bride, but it was his portrayal of Kevin Arnold in The Wonder Years (1988–1993) that cemented his fame. By age thirteen, he was the youngest actor to receive Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations for lead acting in a comedy series. Following the show's conclusion, he attended Stanford University, graduating in 1999 with a degree in English.
Savage transitioned into directing in 1999, helming episodes for numerous Nickelodeon and Disney Channel series, including Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. He also directed for prime-time sitcoms like Modern Family and 2 Broke Girls. His production credits include It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Party Down. While he returned to acting in series like The Grinder and Friends from College, his professional life has been punctuated by controversy.
Allegations of misconduct have surfaced at multiple points in his career. In 1993, a costume designer filed a lawsuit accusing Savage and co-star Jason Hervey of sexual harassment, which was settled out of court. In 2018, another costume designer alleged assault and intimidation on the set of The Grinder, though an investigation by Fox cleared him of wrongdoing. Most recently, in 2022, Savage was fired from the reboot of The Wonder Years following an investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct. Savage has acknowledged the need to address perceived negative behavior while maintaining that some claims were untrue.
