How a tiny Illinois town once fueled the American industrial machine with lead
In short: Before it became a charming tourist destination, Galena was the epicenter of a massive mineral rush. In the mid-19th century, this small river town produced nearly 90 percent of the lead in the United States, powering an economy that once rivaled Chicago and drew the attention of future presidents.
Named for the lead sulfide mineral galena, the city sits in the Driftless Zone, a unique geological pocket that escaped the flattening effects of recent ice age glaciers. This rugged terrain, defined by hills and bluffs, held rich deposits that Native American tribes like the Meskwaki and Ho-Chunk had mined for over a thousand years. By the early 19th century, European-American settlers arrived, and the region transformed into a bustling industrial hub. By 1828, the population had surged to 10,000, matching Chicago's size at the time.
The scale of extraction was immense. Between 1825 and 1828 alone, miners pulled 21 million pounds of lead from the earth. By 1852, the region was responsible for 87 percent of American lead output and 10 percent of the world's total supply. This industrial dominance left a lasting environmental footprint, with pollutants detected as far away as Lake Matoaka in Virginia. The boom also attracted significant political figures; Ulysses S. Grant made his home here, and the DeSoto House Hotel hosted luminaries ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Mark Twain.
As lead demand eventually waned, Galena pivoted from mining to preservation. Today, 85 percent of the city's structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the downtown area is celebrated for its rare, walkable urbanism. While the Galena River is no longer accessible to the massive steamboats that once carried ore to St. Louis, the city has successfully rebranded itself. It now welcomes over one million visitors annually, trading its industrial past for a reputation as one of the most charming small towns in America.
