From YouTube Let's Play to Game Studio: The Evolution of Game Grumps
In short: What began as a simple podcast concept between two friends arguing over video game characters has transformed into a multi-faceted media empire. Today, Game Grumps encompasses live-action comedy, book publishing, and original game development, proving that a channel built on humorous commentary can evolve far beyond its initial Let's Play roots.
Game Grumps was founded on July 10, 2012, by Jon Jafari and Arin Hanson, following a debate about the fighting styles of characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The show’s name originated from animator Ross O'Donovan, who noted the pair's tendency to get grumpy with each other while gaming. While initially conceived as a podcast, it quickly pivoted to a YouTube video series, with their first upload featuring Kirby Super Star on July 18, 2012. Barry Kramer joined as an editor in September 2012, establishing the production team that would eventually expand significantly.
The channel underwent a major shift in June 2013 when Jafari departed to focus on his own project, JonTron. Dan Avidan, vocalist for Ninja Sex Party, stepped in as the new co-host. This transition marked the beginning of a broader expansion, with the introduction of spin-off shows like Steam Train, Table Flip, and Grumpcade. These programs diversified the content, moving from standard gameplay to tabletop sessions, guest-hosted console games, and live-action comedy, such as the Ten Minute Power Hour. By 2015, the team had grown to include members like Brian Wecht, a former theoretical physicist.
Beyond content creation, Game Grumps has established itself as a video game development studio. In 2017, they released their first title, Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator, followed by Soviet Jump Game in 2020 and the psychological horror game Homebody in 2023. The group also maintains a strong philanthropic presence, having raised over $70,000 through Twitch charity livestreams by 2015, and contributing to various causes including the Crisis Text Line and Camp Kesem. As of September 27, 2025, the channel boasts over 5.44 million subscribers and more than 7.05 billion total views, cementing its status as a significant fixture in internet culture.
