In short: Before becoming a central figure in Singaporean governance, Gan Kim Yong built a career in the private sector and civil service. Today, as Deputy Prime Minister, he balances high-level economic responsibilities with a unique political trajectory that has seen him navigate major cabinet roles and shifting electoral landscapes since 2001.

Born in 1959, Gan Kim Yong followed an academic path in engineering, earning both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Cambridge. His professional life began within the Singaporean Civil Service, where he served in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Home Affairs. In 1989, he transitioned to the private sector, joining NatSteel, where he eventually ascended to the roles of president and chief executive officer by 2005.

Gan entered the political arena during the 2001 general election, securing a seat in the Holland–Bukit Panjang GRC through an uncontested walkover. Over the following two decades, he held several significant portfolios, including Minister for Manpower and Minister for Health. His tenure as Health Minister coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he co-chaired a multi-ministerial committee tasked with managing the national response. In 2024, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, a role he continues to hold alongside his position as Minister for Trade and Industry.

His career is marked by diverse responsibilities, ranging from international health policy to financial oversight. In 2018, the World Health Organization appointed him to a commission focused on curbing non-communicable diseases. More recently, he assumed the chairmanship of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and joined the GIC as a director. Despite his long-standing presence in the People's Action Party, his political journey remains dynamic; in the 2025 general election, he shifted from his long-held constituency to contest the Punggol GRC, where he and his team secured victory with 55.17% of the vote.

Beyond his public duties, Gan maintains a private life as a member of the Chen Li Presbyterian Church, where he serves as an elder. His recent appointment as the sole Deputy Prime Minister in the current cabinet, alongside his role as Acting Prime Minister in the absence of Lawrence Wong, underscores his current standing within the Singaporean government.
