From a Minnesota cattle farm to the center of the Hollywood spotlight
In short: Before he was a leading man in sci-fi epics and period dramas, Garrett Hedlund was a student of the American diaspora. Raised on a remote beef cattle farm, he traded wrestling and track for acting lessons, eventually winning a high-stakes casting process to become a modern cult icon.
Born on September 3, 1984, in Roseau, Minnesota, Hedlund grew up in the Scandinavian diaspora near Wannaska, the youngest of three children. His upbringing was defined by the rugged landscape of a remote beef cattle farm, a far cry from the Los Angeles streets he moved to in 2003 to pursue acting. His path to stardom was paved with discipline; after moving to Arizona in 9th grade, he used tips from his job as a waiter to fund acting lessons with coach Jean Fowler.
Hedlund’s breakthrough came at nineteen when he played Patroclus in the 2004 mythological epic Troy. However, it was his role as Sam Flynn in the 2010 film Tron: Legacy that secured his worldwide recognition. He won a 'Darwinian casting process' for the role, a selection method that tested hundreds of actors to find a specific combination of intelligence, wit, humor, look, and physicality. His commitment to the role included performing his own stunts, such as jumping over cars.
Beyond his filmography, which spans from the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis to the action-adventure Triple Frontier, Hedlund is a multi-talented performer. He is a skilled guitarist and violinist—having studied alternative violin techniques under Jeremy Irons during the filming of Eragon—and has recorded music for several soundtracks, including Country Strong and Dirt Music. His versatility has seen him move from modeling for Prada to starring in psychological thrillers like The Tutor.
