In short: In the mid-1970s, a violent confrontation in a Camden pub left guitarist Gary Moore with permanent facial scars. This trauma didn't just alter his appearance; it fundamentally reshaped his musicality, channeling a new, raw emotion into the heavy metal and blues-rock that would define his legendary career.

Born in Belfast in 1952, Gary Moore was a musical chameleon who navigated the shifting landscapes of rock, from the blues-rock of Skid Row and Thin Lizzy to the heavy metal of G-format and the blues revival of the 1990s. His career was marked by a restless search for identity, a journey that saw him move from the late 1960s Irish scene to the heart of the Los Angeles rock circuit.

The turning point in his personal and professional persona occurred at Dingwalls, a London venue. After defending his girlfriend from verbal abuse, Moore was slashed across the face with a broken bottle. According to his former bandmate Eric Bell, this event released a reservoir of 'pent-up anger and emotion' into his playing. For much of the 1980s, Moore attempted to mask the physical remnants of this night by carefully framing himself in photographs or looking downward in videos.

Despite the turbulence—including a period of heavy drug use while in Thin Lizzy and a mid-career crisis where he described his own work as 'shite'—Moore achieved monumental success. His 1990 album, Still Got the Blues, served as a triumphant return to his roots, selling over three million copies worldwide. By shedding the 'dolled up' aesthetic of 1980s hard rock for a more sophisticated bluesman persona, he reclaimed his musical self-respect and cemented his status as a virtuoso.
