From street sweeper to BAFTA nominee: the unconventional rise of Gary Lewis
In short: Before becoming a mainstay of Scottish cinema, Gary Lewis worked as a street sweeper and a library assistant. After a degree in social science, he didn't commit to professional acting until age 32, eventually earning critical acclaim for his portrayal of a grieving father in the breakout film Billy Elliot.
Born in Glasgow in 1957, Lewis's path to the screen was far from linear. After graduating with honours in social science from Glasgow College of Technology in 1983, he spent several years working varied jobs, including roles as a street sweeper and in a library. His early life in Easterhouse was shaped by a father who worked as a coppersmith. Following his studies, he pursued his passion for reading, encouraged by his high school English teacher.
His career trajectory saw him move from the Glasgow stage to international recognition. He gained significant momentum through his collaborations with directors like Kenneth Loach and Peter Mullan. A major breakthrough arrived in 2000 with the film Billy Elliot, where his performance as a father dealing with the 1984-85 miner's strike earned him a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also gained recognition for his work in the television docudrama Supervolcano. Additionally, his performance in the film Mo earned him a BAFTA TV nomination.
Since that breakthrough, Lewis has become a versatile presence in both independent and major studio productions. His film roles cover various genres, ranging from his portrayal of McGloin in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York (2002) to his appearance as Emperor Dro'ge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's The Marvels (2023). He has also been a frequent collaborator in Scottish cinema, appearing in works such as Shallow Grave (1994) and the BBC thriller Vigil. His diverse filmography includes playing an Irish-American character in Martin Scorsese's epic Gangs of New York. Most recently, he appeared as Emperor Dro'ge in the 2023 Marvel Studios production The Marvels.
