From electrician to international star: the versatile career of Scottish actor John Hannah
In short: Before becoming a household name in Four Weddings and a Funeral and The Mummy, John Hannah spent his early years training as an electrician in East Kilbride. His path from a local theatre club to global screens highlights a career defined by unexpected pivots and enduring television presence.
Born in 1962 in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, John Hannah was the youngest of three children. His early life was far removed from the glitz of Hollywood; his mother worked as a cleaner at Marks & Spencer, while his father was a toolmaker. After attending local schools, Hannah pursued a trade, completing an apprenticeship as an electrician. It was only at the suggestion of a colleague that he shifted his focus toward the arts, eventually enrolling at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
Hannah’s breakthrough arrived in 1994 with his role as Matthew in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral, which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. This success paved the way for a diverse filmography, including the romantic comedy Sliding Doors and the popular Mummy quadrilogy. His television career has been equally prolific, spanning roles as a pathologist in McCallum, the title character in the early Rebus series, and the gladiator trainer Quintus Lentulus Batiatus in Spartacus. He also co-founded the production company Clerkenwell Films in 1997, which initially produced the Rebus series.
Beyond acting, Hannah has established himself as a recognizable voice in British media, notably narrating the BBC reality series Race Across the World since 2019. His personal life remains grounded; he married actress Joanna Roth in 1996 after meeting during a production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. Today, he continues to balance his work across international productions, such as the Canadian medical drama Transplant, while living in Richmond with his family. His journey reflects a rare ability to transition between gritty crime dramas, blockbuster comedies, and reality television narration with consistent professional ease.
