In short: Born between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z represents a demographic shift defined by digital ubiquity and social transformation. Unlike their Millennial predecessors, this cohort has no memory of life before smartphones, shaping a pragmatic, diverse, and tech-savvy generation that is fundamentally altering traditional norms regarding identity, career, and family life.

Generation Z, often defined as those born from 1997 to 2012, is widely recognized as the first true digital native generation. While Millennials witnessed the rise of the internet and the transition from landlines to mobile, Gen Z grew up with constant access to streaming content and social media. This environment has fundamentally changed how they interact; they favor anonymous, ephemeral platforms like Snapchat over the deeply personal, permanent posting habits of previous generations.

The generation is marked by its unprecedented diversity, with nearly 50 percent of members identifying as racial or ethnic minorities. This openness extends to social identity, as 16 percent of Gen Zers identify as LGBTQ+, a higher rate than any prior cohort. They are actively challenging traditional gender norms, with over half supporting the inclusion of non-binary options on official forms and profiles. These shifts occur alongside a pragmatic, career-cautious outlook, likely influenced by formative experiences during the 2007–2009 Great Recession.

Societal trends among Gen Z also reflect a departure from established milestones. Research from 2018 indicated that the oldest members of the generation were delaying or foregoing marriage at higher rates than Millennials did at the same age. This behavior is accompanied by a tendency to reside in metropolitan areas and a lower likelihood of relocation compared to their predecessors. As they navigate a world shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the 2001 September 11 attacks, Gen Z continues to redefine the American experience through a lens of individualism and digital connectivity.
