From sketch comedy star to beloved Australian television icon
In short: Glenn Robbins has become a staple of Australian entertainment, moving from the sketch comedy boom of the 1980s to iconic roles that defined a generation of television. From the chaos of 'The Comedy Company' to the suburban charm of 'Kath & Kim', his career spans decades of comedy.
Born on 30 December 1957, Glenn Robbins began his professional performing career in 1981, following his graduation from Melbourne State College in 1979 with a Bachelor of Education. His early acting work included brief appearances in series such as 'Prisoner' and 'Special Squad' in 1984, before he found significant success in the sketch comedy genre.
The late 1980s marked a turning point for Robbins. In 1988, he achieved widespread fame through 'The Comedy Company', where his character 'Uncle Arthur' became a standout success. This momentum continued through the 1990s as he appeared in various sketch shows, including 'Fast Forward' for two seasons starting in 1991, and later 'Full Frontal' in 1993.
Robbins is perhaps most widely recognized for two distinct characters. In 'Kath & Kim', he played Kel Knight from 2002 until the series concluded in 2007, later reprising the role for a 2012 film and a 2022 special. Simultaneously, he portrayed the adventurer Russell Coight in 'All Aussie Adventures' between 2001 and 2002, a role he returned to for a 2004 telemovie and again in 2018.
Beyond sketch comedy, Robbins has been a frequent presence on television panels and game shows. He served as a panellist on Network Ten's 'The Panel' for eight seasons starting in 1998, and launched the Seven Network game show 'Out of the Question' in 2008. His versatility has earned him multiple Logie Award nominations, including Most Popular Actor in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
