From university revues to TV stardom: the multifaceted career of Mick Molloy
In short: A central figure in Australian comedy, Mick Molloy rose from university stage performances to become a household name. From his early collaborations with The D-Generation to hosting major radio and television shows, his career spans decades of sketches, sitcoms, and high-profile sports commentary.
Molloy's ascent began in the late 1980s. After studying performing arts at the University of Melbourne, he performed in the 1987 revue Laminex on the Rocks. This performance caught the attention of the comedy troupe The D-Generation, who subsequently signed him as a writer and performer for their 1988 Seven Network specials.
His work during the 1990s was prolific. He was a key cast member and writer for the ABC's The Late Show between 1992 and 1993, contributing to iconic segments like 'Street Interviews' and 'Commercial Crimestoppers'. He also found significant success on the radio, partnering with Tony Martin for the Austereo programme Martin/Molloy from 1995 to 1998, which produced three ARIA award-winning compilation albums.
Molloy's television career has seen both massive hits and experimental ventures. While his 1999 late-night show, The Mick Molloy Show, was cancelled after only eight of its planned twenty episodes, he has remained a staple of Australian media. This includes hosting AFL-themed shows like Before the Game on Channel 10 and The Front Bar on the Seven Network, as well as his long-standing presence on Triple M radio.
Beyond comedy, Molloy has ventured into film and voice work, appearing in movies like Crackerjack and BoyTown, and providing voices for series such as Bluey. His career is marked by deep ties to Australian pop culture, including his well-known support for the Richmond Football Club.
