From a broken transmitter to the UK's flagship breakfast radio show
In short: At age 14, Greg James thought he was broadcasting to the world, only to discover the transmitter was broken. Today, he hosts the most prominent breakfast show on BBC Radio 1, a journey that began with a failed radio show and a passion for cricket.
Gregory James Alan Milward, known professionally as Greg James, has become a central figure in British broadcasting. Born in Lewisham, South London, on 17 December 1985, his path to stardom was anything but linear. As a child, his life was marked by frequent moves due to his father's role as a headteacher, and as an infant, he survived a rare blood disorder that required three blood transfusions.
His broadcasting career began with a technical mishap; at 14, he was given a show on a local hospital radio station, only to later realize the transmitter was broken and no one had heard him. His time at the University of East Anglia proved pivotal, leading to a 2005 Student Radio Awards win for 'Best Male Presenter'. He joined BBC Radio 1 in June 2007, initially presenting the Early Breakfast Show, and has since held various high-profile roles, including the Drivetime Show and the station's flagship breakfast show since 2018.
Beyond the studio, James has expanded into diverse media formats. He is a successful children's author, co-writing the Kid Normal series with Chris Smith, which has sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into 19 languages. He also explores niche interests through podcasts, such as the cricket-focused Tailenders and the Formula 1 series The Fast And The Curious. Whether through television presenting or investigative podcasts like Sport's Strangest Crimes, James has transitioned from a student radio enthusiast to a versatile media personality.
