The three rules of mogwai care are the only barrier against reptilian chaos
In short: The Gremlins franchise centers on the mogwai, a species that transforms into malicious, reptilian monsters if exposed to light, water, or food after midnight. While these creatures have haunted screens since 1984, their origins remain a mystery, with film adaptations and tie-in novels offering conflicting, often dark, speculative backstories.
The franchise, produced by Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment, began with the 1984 film directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus. It pits the gentle Gizmo against the antagonistic Stripe. The mogwai’s volatility is governed by three strict rules: avoid bright light, which is lethal; keep them away from water, which triggers multiplication; and never feed them after midnight, which causes a violent, reptilian evolution into a Gremlin.
While the films provide no definitive origin for these creatures, the 1984 novelization by George Gipe suggests they were created by an alien scientist. In this version, the species is inherently unstable, with only one in 10,000 mogwai retaining a sweet demeanor. These rare, gentle individuals are described as immortal by human standards, whereas the transformed, violent Gremlins are short-lived. This lore remains unique to the novel, as the films focus primarily on the immediate, chaotic consequences of breaking the care rules.
The franchise has expanded significantly beyond its cinematic roots, spanning video games, comic books, and an animated prequel series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which debuted on HBO Max in 2023. Development of a third theatrical film has been underway for years, with Chris Columbus confirming that the production will favor traditional puppets and animatronics over CGI. After several delays, the project is currently scheduled for release on October 6, 2028.
The cultural footprint of the series even extended to theme parks, with dark rides like The Great Gremlin Adventure appearing at Warner Bros. Movie World in Australia in 1991 and a German counterpart in 1996. Though these attractions have since been replaced, the franchise remains active through modern gaming appearances, such as the inclusion of Gizmo and Stripe in the platform fighter MultiVersus, ensuring the mogwai continue to influence pop culture decades after their initial debut.
