From a butcher's son to the face of American Formula 1
In short: Guenther Steiner didn't just enter Formula 1; he built his way in from a kitchen table. After years as a mechanic and engineer, he orchestrated one of the sport's most significant modern expansions, becoming a polarizing figure known for both his technical grit and his unfiltered personality.
Born in Merano, South Tyrol, Steiner began his career in the trenches of motorsport as a mechanic for Mazda Rally Team Europe between 1986 and 1988. He spent years honing his engineering expertise across various disciplines, including the World Rally Championship with M-Sport, where he served as project manager and director of engineering under legendary drivers like Colin McRae.
Steiner's transition to Formula 1 began in 2001 when Niki Lauda headhunted him to manage Jaguar Racing. While his tenure there was marked by organizational restructuring and a eventual replacement in 2002, it laid the groundwork for his later roles at Red Bull Racing. He eventually moved to the United States in 2006 to help establish a NASCAR team before returning to his own ventures.
The most significant chapter of his career began with a business plan written during the late 2000s financial crisis. Steiner identified an opening for a new F1 entry and convinced Joe Custer and Gene Haas to form a privateer team. On April 14, 2014, he was officially named Team Principal of Haas F1 Team, making them the first American constructor in three decades.
Steiner became a cultural icon through his appearances on 'Drive to Survive,' where his blunt communication style gained widespread attention. Following his departure from Haas in early 2024—which involved a series of legal disputes over commissions and trademarks—he has transitioned into broadcasting for RTL and recently led the consortium that purchased the Red Bull KTM Tech3 MotoGP team.
