From ancient Greek barbershops to the heights of French court fashion
In short: Long before modern salons, hairdressing was a vital social ritual. From Roman barbers shaving beards with razors to 18th-century stylists creating five-foot-tall hair towers, the profession has shaped identity, social status, and even religious practice for thousands of years.
The roots of hairdressing stretch back to antiquity. Greek writers like Homer and Aristophanes documented the craft, where barbers—known as koureus in Greek or tonsor in Latin—performed much more than simple cuts. They trimmed nails, removed stray hairs with tweezers, and shaved beards using razors stored in specialized cases. In these early barbershops, or koureion, the atmosphere was as much about social connection as grooming, serving as popular hubs for sharing gossip.
As the profession evolved, so did its complexity and social reach. In many African communities, hairdressers held prominent roles because hair was viewed as the body's highest point, closest to the divine. By the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe, hairdressing emerged as a distinct profession. This era saw extreme architectural feats in hair, such as the 'tower' style popularized by Madame Martin, and the legendary 'loge d'opera' created by Léonard, which stood five feet above the wearer's head.
The industry has also navigated intense professional shifts. In 18th-century Paris, hairdressers faced competition from wigmakers, leading to disputes over whether they provided a service or a product. While the 20th century brought technological leaps like electric dryers and the 'Marcel wave,' it also introduced modern occupational challenges. Today, the industry is a significant economic force, with many salon-related businesses in the US being independently owned, primarily by women, though practitioners must navigate the complexities of chemical exposure and ventilation.
