The empress who survived fifteen years of exile to raise an empire
In short: When the Mughal Emperor Humayun lost his throne to Sher Shah Suri, he was left wandering in exile. Beside him stood Hamida Banu Begum, a teenage bride who endured desert treks and waterless wastes, eventually birthing the legendary Emperor Akbar in the midst of a nomadic struggle for survival.
Hamida Banul Begum’s entry into the Mughal dynasty was marked by personal reluctance. Born around 1527 to a prestigious Persian family in Sindh, she met Humayun at age fourteen during a banquet in Alwar. While historical evidence suggests she may have been in love with Hindal Mirza, the Emperor's half-brother, she eventually married Humayun in September 1541. This union was not merely romantic; it provided Humayun with vital political support from rival Shia groups during his period of displacement.
Her early years of marriage were defined by extreme hardship. Following the loss of Delhi, she accompanied Humayun through perilous journeys, including a trek through the desert to Umerkot, where the Hindu ruler Rana Prasad provided them asylum. In October 1542, while the Mughal entourage was moving toward Afghanistan, she gave birth to her son, Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar. The following years saw her navigating the vast distances between Sindh, Qandahar, and Persia, often traveling through 'waterless waste' to stay with her husband.
Beyond her role as a survivor, Hamida was a formidable political actor. During her son Akbar's reign, she used her imperial influence to secure pardons for state offenders and intervened in high-level court politics, such as the removal of the minister Bairam Khan in 1560. Her status was so revered that Akbar personally carried her palanquin across a river during a journey from Lahore to Agra. She died on 29 August 1604 and was interred at Humayun's Tomb, leaving a legacy as the 'epitome of innocence' and a pillar of the Mughal throne.
