How a CIA experiment to create super-soldiers turned into a global television odyssey
In short: Hanna follows a 15-year-old girl raised in a remote Polish forest by a former CIA operative. After discovering her origins as a test subject in the clandestine UTRAX program, she must navigate a dangerous world of assassins, indoctrination, and shifting loyalties as she fights for her own survival.
The series, created by David Farr for Amazon Prime Video, expands upon the 2011 film of the same name. At its core is the UTRAX program, a secret initiative that enhanced the DNA of infants to create elite super-soldiers. When Erik Heller, a CIA operative, falls in love with Hanna’s mother, Johanna, he rescues the infant and flees, prompting the agency to order the elimination of all remaining test subjects.
The narrative evolves through three seasons, tracking Hanna’s transition from a forest-raised survivor to a target of the revived UTRAX-REGENESIS program. This second iteration focuses on indoctrination at a facility known as The Meadows, where trainees are groomed for lethal service. Key figures like Marissa Wiegler, initially a CIA operative tasked with shutting down the project, eventually become a mother figure and ally to Hanna, complicating the moral landscape of the show.
Production spanned multiple countries, including Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and France. The second season utilized Bramshill House in the UK to depict the fictional Meadows campus. While the first season received mixed reviews, with critics noting its similarity to the original film, the second season earned significant acclaim, with a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The final season, which premiered in November 2021, concludes the saga by exploring the influence of Pioneer, a shadowy organization pulling the strings behind the UTRAX programs. Through the lens of Hanna’s journey, the series examines themes of identity, the ethics of genetic manipulation, and the struggle to break free from the programming imposed by those in power.
