In short: Founded in 1919, Harrogate Town A.F.C. has navigated decades of league shifts and name changes. Once a disbanded side, the club has transformed into a professional outfit, eventually securing a historic first promotion to the English Football League in 2020.

The club's identity is deeply tied to its home town, earning the nickname 'the Sulphurites' due to Harrogate's famous sulphur springs. While football attempts in the town date back to 1907, the first successful club, Harrogate A.F.C., was founded in 1914 but saw its fixtures postponed by the First World War. Following the war, Robert Ackrill Breare helped reconstitute the club as Harrogate Hotspurs in 1919.

The club's journey through the English football pyramid has been marked by significant transitions. After disbanding in 1932, football returned to the town in 1935 with the Hotspurs. The club changed its name to Harrogate Town once the Second World War ended. They became founding members of several leagues, including the Northern Counties East League in 1982 and the Conference North in 2004.

A major turning point occurred in the 2019–20 season. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, league standings relied on average points-per-game. Harrogate Town finished second with an average of 1.78, qualifying for the play-offs. On 2 August 2020, they defeated Notts County 3–1 at Wembley Stadium to earn their first-ever promotion to the English Football League. This achievement made them the first EFL side to ever participate in the FA Trophy, which they won on 3 May 2021 after defeating Concord Rangers.

The club plays its home matches at Wetherby Road, a ground with a capacity of 5,000. To comply with Football League regulations upon their 2020 promotion, the club had to replace their synthetic pitch with grass, leading to a temporary groundshare at Doncaster Rovers's Keepmoat Stadium until the work was completed.
