In short: In 2006, they were an unknown entity in Vietnam's lowest football tier. Fast forward less than a decade, and this club had transformed into a domestic powerhouse, claiming its first top-flight title and establishing a legacy of rapid, unprecedented ascent.

Founded in 2006 by the T&T Group, the club—originally known as T&T Hanoi—began its journey in the Third Division. Under the management of former international Triệu Quang Hà, the team achieved a remarkable feat of three consecutive promotions. By 2009, they had climbed through the Second and First Divisions to reach the V.League 1, the nation's top tier.

The club's identity underwent a significant shift in 2016. Following long periods of operating as T&T, the T&T Group chose to gift the club to Hanoi's residents. They withdrew their stake and officially renamed the team Hanoi Football Club. This transition coincided with a unique gesture from the City Council, which granted the club use of the historic Hàng Đẫy Stadium.

Since its professionalization in the 2000-2001 season, the club has become a dominant force, securing a record 6 V.League 1 titles. Beyond local leagues, the side attained the 2019 AFC Cup inter-zone play-off final and entered the AFC Champions League group stages during 2023–24. This period of excellence was punctuated by a historic victory over the defending champions, Urawa Red Diamonds, in 2023.

Despite this trophy haul, the club's journey has been marked by intense rivalries and structural changes. The 'Northern Derby' against Hải Phòng is famously volatile, often characterized by heavy use of flares. Meanwhile, the 'Vietnamese Super Derby' against Hoang Anh Gia Lai remains a media heavyweight, driven by differing management philosophies and the shared success of the Vietnam U23 squad.
