Was it a reboot or a tenth season for the Heroes universe?
In short: When NBC aired a teaser for Heroes Reborn during the 2015 Super Bowl, audiences weren't sure what to expect. Creator Tim Kring insisted this 13-episode event was not a fifth season, but actually the tenth, attempting to fix the original show's sustainability issues with a closed-ended narrative.
The miniseries premiered on September 24, 2015, following a six-chapter web prequel titled Dark Matters. Occurring twelve months following an Odessa, Texas, terror strike, the narrative depicts a reality where vigilantes such as Luke and Joanne Collins pursue 'evolved humans'—known as evos. The plot weaves together new characters, such as Tommy and Miko, with legacy heroes like Hiro Nakamura and Angela Petrelli to prevent a geomagnetic reversal from exposing Earth to lethal solar radiation. The story begins one year after a terrorist attack in Odessa. It follows individuals with unique abilities who must flee from vigilantes while trying to save the world.
Despite the ambitious scope, critical reception was mixed. On Metacritic, the series averaged a score of 53 out of 100. Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 42% positive rating from 50 reviews, with critics noting that the show prioritized special effects and melodrama over the original's narrative intrigue. This lukewarm reception coincided with the announcement on January 13, 2016, that the series would not be renewed for a second season. Universal Studios Home Entertainment released the series on DVD and Blu-ray in April 2016. Additionally, Titan Comics published two limited series related to the franchise.
Tim Kring, the series creator and executive producer, admitted that the show's identity may have caused audience confusion. While he intended for the 13-episode structure to provide a definitive conclusion to avoid the sustainability problems of the original series, he expressed remorse that the 'event series' concept was not clearly understood by viewers. Phosphor Games also released two video game tie-ins for various platforms. These included mobile versions for iOS and Android, alongside a release for PlayStation 4 and PC.
