In short: Christian Ward’s path to music royalty was nearly derailed by a forced relocation to a military academy. After a turbulent start in the rap game, he pivoted from the spotlight to the studio, becoming one of the most influential architects of modern hits.

Born in Chicago in 1985, Ward began his career in 2001 as a rapper named Iceberg, signed to DMX's Bloodline Records. However, his trajectory was abruptly altered in July 2001 when he was tricked into being sent to Spring Creek Lodge Academy, a military boarding school in Montana. His father requested his release from DMX's imprint due to concerns that Ward's association with the rapper would lead to a criminal lifestyle. Ward eventually improved his performance at the academy and was released in late 2002. During his early days, he faced issues with drug use and alcohol. He moved to New Jersey to self-produce a studio album. His mother sent him pager messages while he was in a studio session. He eventually earned his GED in 2003.

Following his release, Ward moved to Los Angeles and re-emerged as Yung Berg. He signed with Epic Records and achieved commercial success with singles like "Sexy Lady" and "The Business," and his 2008 debut album, Look What You Made Me. Despite these hits, he faced critical pushback and eventually transitioned away from performing. By 2014, he officially rebranded as Hitmaka, shifting his focus entirely to music production and A&R leadership. He also appeared in a music video for Kat DeLuna. He collaborated with Ray J on a top five hit. In 2009, he formed a production group called the Dream Team. He was fired from a reality show after an arrest.

As Hitmaka, Ward became a powerhouse behind the scenes, producing top 40 hits for artists including Lil Wayne, Big Sean, and Megan Thee Stallion. By 2019, he attained a leadership rank as Atlantic Records' executive vice president of urban A&R, subsequently moving into comparable positions at Empire Distribution. His professional standing was confirmed during 2022, following his victory as Producer of the Year at a BET Hip Hop Award. He co-produced tracks for Jeremih and Ty Dolla Sign. He won a BET Hip Hop Award in October 2022. He also released a collaborative album with Eric Bellinger. His next project with Icewear Vezzo is set for 2026.
