In short: Formed in 1997, the Hot Boys became a cornerstone of Southern hip hop through their partnership with Cash Money Records. Despite achieving platinum success and shaping the genre, the group faced a turbulent trajectory marked by legal battles, internal disputes, and a long-awaited reunion that spans over two decades.

The group emerged from Uptown New Orleans in the summer of 1997, originally featuring B.G., Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Turk, and Lil Derrick. Their debut, Get It How U Live!, found regional success before the group signed a $30 million distribution deal with Universal Records. This partnership propelled their second album, 1999's Guerrilla Warfare, to the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and earned platinum status, cementing their influence on the national stage.

Internal friction began to surface by 2001, when Juvenile publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the label's financial management. By 2003, most members had departed, leaving Lil Wayne as the sole original member remaining at Cash Money. Although the label released a final collection of archival recordings titled Let 'Em Burn that same year, the group had effectively fractured. Subsequent years were defined by legal complications, including significant prison sentences for both Turk and B.G. that repeatedly stalled efforts to organize a full reunion.

Despite these setbacks, the members maintained intermittent professional connections. Lil Wayne, who became the most commercially prolific member, spearheaded various attempts to bring the group back together starting in 2008. While full-scale reunions remained elusive due to incarceration, the members collaborated on individual tracks and appeared together at festivals. A definitive shift occurred in May 2024, when Juvenile confirmed that the group had officially reunited and begun production on a new studio album, signaling a potential return for the influential ensemble.
