In short: Stretching from the outskirts of New York City to Albany, the Hudson Valley is more than a scenic river corridor. It is a historic landscape that has evolved from indigenous territories and Dutch fur-trading outposts into a center for industrial innovation, romantic art, and modern biotechnology.

Long before European arrival, the Hudson Valley was home to the Lenape, Wappinger, and Mahican peoples. These groups lived in clans and villages, maintaining a complex network of trade and defense, including fortresses like Navish at Croton Point. Following Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage—initially an attempt to find the Northwest Passage—the Dutch established the colony of New Netherland. Trading outposts like Fort Orange, later renamed Albany, laid the foundation for the region's future economic importance.

Under British rule, the valley became an agricultural powerhouse, earning the title of colonial America’s breadbasket. Landlords managed vast manors, while grain was shipped downriver to New York City for export. The Revolutionary War later highlighted the river's strategic value; the British sought to control the waterway to sever New England from the rest of the colonies. By the 19th century, the region’s character shifted again, popularized by Washington Irving’s gothic tales and the romantic landscapes of the Hudson River School painters.

The Industrial Revolution brought further transformation. The completion of the Erie Canal and the expansion of railroads, such as the Hudson River Railroad finished in 1851, turned the valley into a manufacturing hub. By the late 19th century, it was the world’s largest brick-producing region, churning out one billion bricks annually. Today, the area continues to pivot, rebranding as 'Tech Valley' to compete with Silicon Valley, while Westchester County has emerged as a biotechnology center with over US$1 billion in private investment as of 2016.
