How the Houston Comets Built the First Dynasty of Women's Professional Basketball
In short: The Houston Comets were the inaugural powerhouse of the WNBA, securing four consecutive championships between 1997 and 2000. Led by league icon Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, the team defined an era of dominance before eventually folding in 2008. Their rise and fall remains a pivotal chapter in the history of American sports.
The Houston Comets emerged as the WNBA's first true dynasty, winning the league's initial four titles from 1997 to 2000. Central to this success was Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, who became the league's first Most Valuable Player. After playing professionally in Italy and winning Olympic gold in 1988, Cooper-Dyke returned to the United States to lead the Comets. Her performance was historic; she topped the league in scoring during the inaugural 1997 season and earned MVP honors for both the regular season and the playoffs.
The team's dominance relied on a core group of stars, including Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. Together, they maintained a level of excellence that saw the Comets remain undefeated in WNBA Finals appearances. Cooper-Dyke's individual brilliance continued through the 2000 season, during which she was again recognized as the Finals MVP. By the time she retired in 2000, she had established herself as the league's first major superstar, later finishing her career with impressive per-game averages of 21 points and 4.9 assists.
Despite their early success, the franchise faced significant instability in the following years. Following the 2006 season, the team underwent major front-office changes, including the resignation of long-time head coach Van Chancellor. Financial challenges and ownership difficulties eventually led to the team's dissolution in 2008. While the WNBA initially suggested the closure might be temporary, the franchise was ultimately disbanded, marking the end of a legendary run that had set the standard for professional women's basketball in the United States.
