In short: Activated in 1918, the III Armored Corps has evolved from a World War I infantry formation into a high-tech command center. Over the last century, it has served as a critical training hub, a testing ground for military innovation, and a primary headquarters for major operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

First organized on 16 May 1918 in France, the III Corps was initially designed as part of the American Expeditionary Force. Its early combat experience included spearheading assaults during the Third Battle of the Aisne and protecting the east flank of the First United States Army during the Meuse-Argonne campaign. By the end of World War I, the corps had reached the German border, eventually demobilizing at Camp Sherman, Ohio.

Throughout the interwar years and World War II, the corps functioned as a vital training element. It was deployed to the European Theater in 1944, where it famously relieved the surrounded 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, the corps transitioned into a Cold War training powerhouse, testing new doctrines and equipment—such as the M1 Abrams tank and AH-64 Apache helicopter—while overseeing the deployment of thousands of troops to Korea and Vietnam.

The corps' role shifted significantly in the 21st century. It saw its first combat deployment since World War II in 2004, serving as the administrative command for Multi-National Corps – Iraq. By 2010, it managed the transition of security responsibilities to Iraqi forces, overseeing a reduction of U.S. personnel from 110,000 to 50,000. In 2013, it deployed to Afghanistan to lead the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, facilitating the transition to Afghan-led security operations before returning to its ongoing mission of training and readiness at home.
