From a teenage immigrant to UFC star: the rise of Ignacio Bahamondes
In short: At 16, Ignacio Bahamondes arrived in Miami alone, speaking no English and chasing a dream. Today, the Chilean fighter is a prominent force in the UFC, known for his striking power and high-stakes performances that have earned him multiple prestigious bonuses.
Born in Santiago, Chile, on August 27, 1997, Bahamondes was raised in a combat sports environment, following his father, a former South American WKN kickboxing champion, into the ring. After building an amateur kickboxing foundation, he made the pivotal move to the United States at age 16 to pursue mixed martial arts. This transition saw him move from a 10–3 regional record, which included becoming the inaugural lightweight champion in LUX Fight League, to the global stage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
His entry into the UFC was secured on November 4, 2020, when he won a second-round knockout against Edson Gomez on Dana White's Contender Series 34. Since then, his career has been defined by both technical dominance and disciplinary hurdles. During his April 2021 clash with John Makdessi, he recorded a weight of 156.75 pounds, exceeding the lightweight cap by 0.75 pounds. This resulted in a catchweight bout and a fine of 20% of his purse, which was awarded to his opponent.
Bahamondes has become a frequent recipient of performance-based accolades. He has secured four Performance of the Night awards, notably for his victories over Roosevelt Roberts, Christos Giagos, Manuel Torres, and Jalin Turner. His durability and excitement have also earned him a Fight of the Night award for his March 2026 bout against Tofiq Musayev. While he has faced setbacks, including unanimous decision losses to Ľudovít Klein and Rafael Fiziev, his ability to secure finishes—ranging from head kick knockouts to triangle choke submissions—has solidified his reputation in the division.
