The Onion's boldest satire yet: taking over the Infowars media empire
In short: In July 2026, the satirical news outlet The Onion launched a parodic reboot of Infowars. By acquiring the platform once managed by Alex Jones, The Onion aims to dismantle the conspiracy-driven media model from within, transforming a source of misinformation into a destination for comedy and social critique.
The acquisition followed a legal battle where Alex Jones was ordered to pay approximately $1.4 billion to the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. During bankruptcy proceedings, the court-appointed manager licensed the Infowars property to The Onion. Despite a Texas appeals court pausing the acquisition, The Onion proceeded with its parody programming, led by creative director Tim Heidecker.
The platform, branded as InfoWars, debuted on July 2, 2026, on YouTube. It features programs like The Jim Haggerty Show, starring Brad Holbrook as a jaded, disgraced former news host, and Emergency with Tim Heidecker. These shows mimic the rapid-fire, conspiratorial style of the original Infowars, satirizing the right-wing media culture that thrives on audience fear and rage. The Onion also sells merchandise, such as plushies of gay frogs, to fund its operations and has donated $100,000 to the Sandy Hook families.
Beyond simple mockery, the project functions as a meta-commentary on internet culture. The content includes satirical infomercials, skits, and special presentations like Week of Miracles and Alpha Child System. While the initial phase focuses on reflecting the absurdities of the original network, Heidecker has stated plans to eventually pivot the site into a broader comedy streaming platform. The project remains a complex blend of performance art, legal irony, and a deliberate attempt to redirect the attention and revenue once captured by conspiracy theories.
