In short: How does a single institution become Italy's largest bank? It wasn't built by a single vision, but through a centuries-long chain of mergers, acquisitions, and strategic consolidations, stretching from a 1583 foundation to a trillion-dollar modern powerhouse.

The corporate identity of Intesa Sanpa_'s roots reaches back to 1583, with its earliest foundations tied to the Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino. While the modern group emerged from the 2007 merger of Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI, its DNA is a complex mosaic of Italian financial history. Some of its components, like the Milanese bank Cariplo, trace their origins to an 1823 Austrian Empire savings bank established to combat economic hardship.

The bank's growth has been defined by aggressive consolidation. In the late 1990s, the group absorbed entities like Banca Commerciale Italiana and Banco Ambrosiano Veneto. More recently, the 2020 takeover of UBI Banca—achieving over 91% ownership—solidified its dominance. This expansion has been balanced by strategic divestments, such as selling off non-core assets like shares in Visa Europe and parts of its insurance business to Crédit Agricole.

Today, Intesa Sanpaolo is a global heavyweight, ranking 38th in the world by total assets. As of 2025, its assets have reached approximately US$1.011 trillion, placing it 40th in the Fortune Global 500. The group operates a massive network, serving roughly 14 million customers in Italy and an additional 7.5 million across Central and Southeast Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa through various subsidiaries.

Despite its massive scale, the bank has faced significant modern challenges. This includes navigating the 2015 'bail-in' of shareholders during banking rescues, managing the divestment of Russian operations following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and addressing internal security breaches, such as a 2024 incident where a clerk was accused of unauthorized access to the accounts of high-profile Italian officials.
